　　1. root around

　　翻找，翻尋

　　root的本意是根;根源，作動詞表達翻找，翻尋，這個短語尤指在其他物品中尋找，搜尋。

　　She rooted through/among the papers on her desk.

　　她在桌上的文件中翻來翻去地找東西。

　　2. poke around

　　搜索;翻找

　　poke主要指用手指、工具或器具去“戳，刺，捅”，如果你想說“扎心了，老鐵”，就可以來一句You poked my heart!

　　I was poking around in the drawer, looking for the key, when I found this!

　　我在抽屜里翻來翻去找鑰匙，就在這時找到了這個!

　　3. rummage

　　翻找，翻尋，亂翻

　　rummage常和in/through搭配，形容翻箱倒柜地尋找。

　　She rummaged in/through all the drawers, looking for a pen.

　　她把所有抽屜都翻了個遍，想找支筆。

　　4. turn sth upside down

　　將…翻了個底朝天

　　這個短語指你搜遍了整個角落，常常還留下一片狼藉。

　　I turned the apartment upside down but I couldn't find the letter.

　　我把公寓翻了個底朝天也還是找不著那些照片。

　　5. rifle

　　迅速翻查;匆忙翻找

　　rifle就是“來福槍;步槍”的意思，當它用作動詞，就表示匆忙翻找某物，經(jīng)常指偷盜行為。

　　The safe had been rifled and the diamonds were gone.

　　保險柜被洗劫了，鉆石不翼而飛。

　　6. trawl

　　搜尋;網(wǎng)羅

　　trawl表示搜尋的時候，指的是為了得到自己想要的而搜尋大量的信息。

　　You need to trawl through a lot of data to get results that are valid.

　　要想獲得有效的結(jié)果你得搜尋大量的資料。

　　7. scout

　　偵察;搜索;尋找

　　當你使用scout的時候，多指搜尋了整個區(qū)域。

　　He's scouting about/around for somewhere better to live.

　　他到處尋找更好的住處。

　　它作名詞的話，尤指體育或娛樂界的人才發(fā)掘者，星探。

　　認真搜尋;仔細搜查

　　comb多指警方徹底仔細搜查以發(fā)現(xiàn)證據(jù)。

　　Investigators combed through the wreckage.

　　搜尋

　　forage的本意是“糧草;飼料”，作動詞尤指四處尋找食物。

　　The children had been living on the streets, foraging for scraps.

　　那些孩子露宿街頭，四處尋找殘羹剩飯。

　　10. like finding a needle in a haystack

　　大海撈針

　　haystack是干草堆的意思，在草堆里找針(needle)，不就是大海撈針嘛!

　　Looking for my key in the mess of the desk is like finding a needle in a haystack.

　　在雜亂的書桌上找我的鑰匙就像是大海撈針一般。
