Ray于1974年出生在新罕布什爾州新漢普郡Nashua。自幼隨母親四處顛沛流離。
當(dāng)Ray很小的時(shí)候，他母親帶著他和兄弟們離開了正在出門旅行的音樂家父親搬去了北方。
因此他在很多年間和父親失去聯(lián)系，彼此音訊全無。因?yàn)楦赣H的緣故，年輕的LaMontagne拒絕參加所有的音樂活動，替代以投入到大量的奇幻小說閱讀中。
他的母親帶著他和其他五個(gè)孩子們不停地搬家，四處尋找工作。
因此少年的LaMontagne幾乎沒有任何機(jī)會和其他孩子們成為朋友。
最后，LaMontagne和家人搬到了猶他州的摩根繼續(xù)他的高中生活。
